Compare with another Company then we are happy on production of a written quotation indicating exactly the same carpet and underlay to have another look at our calculations.

Meet your Budget – we will be very happy to make suggestions to provide an alternative quote for a similar carpet. It is possible that a carpet in the same style / pile density / pile weight can work out cheaper from a different Manufacturer.

When Comparing Prices:

Final total price should be compared and not the individual components as every flooring Company will price differently.

Fair comparisons can only be made, if like for like is being compared – Carpets come in different qualities /pile density / pile weight. There are thousands of 80/20 Twists and although they may look the same they most likely will not be. If you see something completely different elsewhere we should be able to source that carpet and if you wish, quote you for it.

Check alternative quotations for grade of underlay, if new grippers are included, if door-bars are being supplied, if joins are necessary, is so are they being made in appropriate areas? Alternative quotations can make savings on all of these things but not necessarily give a good finish.

Finally, Floor Dimensions experienced fitters are employed by the Company and this is becoming less common in this day and age. Quite often other Companies will require you to pay the fitter separately. Our fitters are given the correct amount of time to complete your installation to a high standard and if you do have a problem you can return to us and be sure we will correct that problem.

No-one at Floor Dimensions works on commission, no-one has an ulterior motive to sell one particular carpet above another. All estimators have been in the flooring industry all their working lives.

What Is The Best Flooring For Underfloor Heating?

The popularity of underfloor heating has grown enormously, as homeowners seek to find cost-effective ways of heating their household. It is also possible to retrofit underfloor heating into older properties with existing subfloors, which has increased the heating system’s appeal immeasurably.

There are two different types of underfloor heating systems – warm water and electric. Warm water underfloor heating systems require plastic pipework to be installed underneath the floor and connected to the property’s primary central heating source. Meanwhile electric underfloor heating systems feature wired or matting systems which operate independently from your home’s central heating, making it well-suited to one-room installations.

Warm water underfloor heating works particularly well with a variety of floorings, including vinyl floor coverings, engineered wood and even carpet. Some suppliers incorrectly state that carpet must have a thermal resistance of no more than 1.5/1.7 tog. The Carpet Foundation states that this is not the case.

A recent study, carried out in conjunction with the Underfloor Heating Manufacturers Association, testing five different types of carpet and two different underlays in combination with each other over an underfloor heating installation. The results showed that none of the carpet and underlay combinations had a negative effect on the efficient warming of the airspace in the room above.

However, The Carpet Foundation does recommend that only underlays with tog values of less than 1.3 tog should be placed on top of an underfloor heating installation.

Wood Flooring With Underfloor Heating

Engineered hardwood flooring is the best type of wood flooring to install on top of an underfloor heating system. That’s because it reacts well to changes in floor temperature better than softer, thinner wood. Attention must always be paid to the thickness of the flooring to ensure it does not act as an insulator, blocking the heat from warming the airspace above.

Note: A general rule for wood flooring on underfloor heating systems is that the floor temperature should never exceed 27°C.

Vinyl Flooring With Underfloor Heating

Most luxury vinyl flooring can be safely installed over an underfloor heating system. Vinyl as a material is designed to heat up and cool down fast. Bear in mind that vinyl floors are subject to a top floor temperature restriction – often 27°C – which limits the heat output somewhat and would not therefore be well-suited for rooms and conservatories that are considered high heat loss areas.

Carpet Flooring With Underfloor Heating

As we’ve already discussed, carpet flooring is suitable for installation over an underfloor heating system, as long as the carpet and the underlay does not act as an insulator, blocking the heat from warming the airspace above.

Rubber Flooring With Underfloor Heating

Highly resistant and absorbent for everyday use, rubber flooring is growing increasingly in popularity for domestic and commercial flooring installations. Rubber floor coverings are effective over underfloor heating. Solid rubber flooring is highly conductive, its surface warms up quickly and emits a generous high heat output into the air above.

Asthma & Carpets – The Facts

There is a common misconception that carpet is a carrier for asthma and allergies. Whilst it is true that carpets can accumulate dust and dirt particles quicker than the majority of hard surfaces, for dust mites to thrive they require a specific temperature and humidity that’s too low in carpet.

It is said that temperatures need to be between 18-25 degrees Celsius, with humidity levels between 60-70%. The temperature and humidity of carpet is well below this, ensuring a climate that’s not conducive for live dust mites to spread.

It’s unfortunate that many people wrongly assume carpet causes asthma and dust allergies and seek to change their flooring as a result. The Carpet Foundation has a number of interesting statistics from studies conducted by leading scientists across Europe, which back up the fact that hard flooring increases the risk of sensitisation in the air.

Carpet Is Less Conducive To Dust Mites Than Smooth, Harder Flooring

In Sweden, carpet sales have reduced by more than three quarters (77%) in 15 years, however there has been a corresponding 300% increase in asthma cases. Meanwhile, in Germany, scientists found that the average level of particles and allergens in the indoor atmosphere above carpeted floor was 30.4ug/m3, compared with 62.9ug/m3 above smooth floors – making the latter twice as likely to make inhabitants susceptible to dust particles.

While dust and allergen particles run the risk of becoming airborne from smooth, hard floors, carpeted materials act more like a sponge, soaking up more of the particles and subsequently minimising the exposure potential.

Regular vacuuming of carpets can substantially reduce the chances of sensitisation again, keeping allergen levels significantly lower than those found on harder flooring. Ventilation can also help guard against the growth of dust mite populations. Flooding rooms with fresh air not only improves ventilation but it also keeps temperatures and humidity levels at acceptable levels.

The Most Common Asthma And Allergy Triggers In Your Home

Now that we’ve established that the removal of carpets is not beneficial to asthma sufferers, it’s important to consider the other triggers of asthma and dust allergies in your home that you may have overlooked.

Central heating - Once the central heating comes on when the cold temperatures bite outside, dust mites will quickly multiply. However, it can be even worse for those without central heating. The dry heat central heating gives out, is less conducive to thriving dust mites, with damper homes much more susceptible to asthma and allergens.

Open fires - It is said that burning wood from open fires or wood-burning stoves can trigger asthma symptoms in some people. The wood gives off fine particles which, if breathed in, can inflame airways.

Furniture - Furniture such as bedding, shelving and even some carpets can feature a chemical known as formaldehyde which may be used in the manufacture of these products. In scientific terms, it is a volatile organic compound, which means it becomes a gas at room temperature. We therefore recommend that you keep rooms well-ventilated from the moment you install new furniture.

Cleaning products - Some cleaning products and air fresheners will also contain volatile organic compounds which can trigger asthma if the chemicals are inhaled.

Paints - If you’re a keen decorator or DIYer, you’ll be interested to know that some paints, glues and varnishes feature volatile organic compounds too. However, most large DIY stores now clearly label the VOC levels of these products. If you do paint regularly, ensure the rooms are well-ventilated throughout the decorating process.

The stunning creations are painted by Jill Hodgson, a professional artist, ceramist and interior designer, who has exhibited successfully throughout East Anglia for almost 20 years. Jill has established a place as a gallery artist in Buckenham Galleries (Southwold), The Ferini Gallery (Pakefield) and The Bretts Gallery (Monks Eleigh).

Jill’s approach to her artwork sees her create pictures in plaster – their creation similar to that of pargetting of old. Additional depth and variation is created through the multi-layering of paints and glazes, resulting in a magnificent multi-faceted finish. Her subject matter varies, but mostly it reflects the countryside around her home – ideal for those seeking rustic, rural paintings to complement traditional and contemporary interiors alike.
